FIRST of all, let me say: this has not by any means been an easy decision. SECOND, The insurance companies are playing roulette with many lives, and you better pay attention people.One day you are going to need surgery, and guess what? Due to an exclusion in the policy, approved by your employer,there is NO rider included to cover surgery, and you are SOL. This is an extreme, yes, and it seems further and further do the insurance companies move closer to it. These are the companies who thought by making surgeries like RNY WLS or Lap Band surgery, out of network, that would be a deterrent. And if you think Im kidding, the exclusion conversation, is one I had with Aetna, back in 2/2005. And I wouldnt be surprised if it is a sign of things to come, with other surgeries. THIRD, if anyone says, this is the easy way out, you could not be more than 360 degrees from truth. It is not the bed of roses Carnie Wilson gives you the illusion of, but there are daily struggles with differnet problems, head hunger, hernias, naseau, dehydration, loss of hair, etc. Benefits? they outweigh the risks, even death. Yes that is right, because without medical intervention, you are on a short ticket there. Post surgery,aside from the total amount of weight you have lost, it is a life altering decision -NO DOUBT about it. IT IS A GIFT YOU GIVE YOURSELF at the expense of your insurance company. Yes they do foot the bill.FOURTH, do I sound defensive? nahhhhh. LOL I am still me,but I have garnered a plethora of information regarding this surgery, as I researched over the last 2 yrs. My mind was made up last Summer, and I have been working at completig the goal since then. FIFTH, is there a lot of presurgical testing? Yes. Does it hurt? No. Is it necessary? ABSOLUTELY. Who Pays? Insurance. Then again, you might be the one who winds up paying,if you don't do your homework, don't pick a most qualified surgeon, and don't reearch the surgery. SIXTH: for anyone contemplating WLS, I Highly recommend this book: it runs the gamut from decision making to insurance, from complications to successful tips and frequently asked questions. It is $13.95 and also available through your local library. It is current (pub 2003) and
easily understood,even though written by an M.D.
