A glut on the vampire market? 1/6/2010 8:10:03 PM
Some musings on the large number of blood-suckers hanging around in the media. Dave her, again... i hope you all had a wonderful holiday season
I was sitting here, gazing into my deep (but clean) navel, when suddenly it hit me: maybe there's too MANY vampire related works out there in the various media! This might be a threat to any possibility of success vis-a-vis my novel ( I should have been dictating my sequel rather than navel-gazing, I realise now). So I thought a moment about the... competition.
Of course, you have the Underworld bunch: good shots and swords-people one and all... but they can't handle WEREWOLVES?! Bram Stoker must be rolling in his grave (so to speak). Dracula could have COMMANDED a whole army of lycans, if he wanted to, but he was more one to get close and personal with the ladies. Most of the celluloid vampires from the 30's "Dracula" to the white trash of "Near Dark" played by the rules... although I always thought staking one would just leave you with one PISSED Undead!
Lately, and I won't mention any titles for fear of getting hung upside down and tickled with blow-torches, there are a new breed: "Oh, woe is me! I'm a hunky but sensitive vampire in love with a mortal girl! Oh, woe!"... these guys "sparkle" in the daylight, I'm informed. AND I also noticed werewolves being thrown into these entertainments for good measure.
Well, folks, if you ever read my book(s), you'll find that I must be fond of vampires... cuz I employ them a lot. These Undead are as about "touchy and feely" as a grizzly bear with syphilis. Personality isn't their strong suit... can we say "sociopathic"? They are rough and they are tough and don't have sweet, gooey centers. I mean, they are the Bad Guys, after all! They main methods of getting their point across are random acts of graphic violence.
But the higher ranks do have minds and complex interactions between one another and I think this makes almost pitiful... but just almost.
P.S. Yep, driving a stake in 'em just makes them mad.
