To cut or not to cut - that is the question. It's that time of year again! The grass is standing high in the fields and it's ready to be cut. I have checked the weather forecast every day for a week and up to yesterday it said there was to be no rain until Tuesday afternoon. I booked Tom (both books) to come and cut the grass tomorrow and the baler man to come on Tuesday morning.
Now the weather forecast says there will be Very Light Rain on Sunday night/Monday morning when the grass will be lying in the fields and at its most vulnerable. So what does one do? Once it is cut there is no going back and if it rains you just have to wait and worry until it dries up again - Graham (both books) once had his grass lying in the fields for three weeks. All the goodness leeches out of it and it's not good fodder for the winter. It's a real quandary and stresses me out!
Then there's Zoe and Heather out in the new shed (LwtLoLA) waiting for their 'time'. Both are heifers (first timers) and both look as if they could calve at any second, so that means I am running out to look at them every five minutes in case we have to get the vet. These will be Low Arvie calves 111 and 112. Usually the cows manage fine by themselves, but just a few times things have gone wrong and we have lost two calves at birth over the years. One was a breech presentation and the other was a very big calf. Each time the vet couldn't get it out before the umbilical cord broke and the calf did not start breathing in time. It's very distressing to think that they were perfectly healthy calves, nine months in the making and yet didn't quite make it. Beauty (both books) had twins last year and they were all muddled up inside her. Happily the vet that came that day was Catherine, the lady vet, and with her small hands she was able to sort them out and they both survived.
So you can see why I am worrying on two counts at the moment.
On a happier note, it is Friday. Latin has finished for the summer (boo!) but the Dorothys (previous blogs) are still going to keep going with their Friday afternoon Spanish and my little Maths girl (previous blogs) is still to have her usual lesson. I find out today whether she has passed her assessment at school. I really hope she did and then my efforts will all have been worth while, but I'm not too confident. She is a lovely little girl with an excellent imagination, but her Maths ability does leave a bit to be desired. For example, given a problem involving the cost of things, her mind will go into overdrive about whether the prices given are realistic and she says things like 'Huh, I wouldn't pay that much' and then she gets bogged down in thinking about things like that and forgets what the set problem is all about. So its quite frustrating really and, I suppose, just one more worry to add to the rest!
