A new Lady of Low Arvie 6/19/2010 11:30:54 PM
There she was, when I went out at 5am this morning, lying contentedly by her mother. This is what makes all the hard work so worthwhile, when you see a new life created. I had to wait for Richard to get up to know whether its was a bull or a heifer calf, but he discovered she's a heifer, so I've named her Lady Holly. She is Low Arvie calf 111 and her number is UK585065 400111. She will be registered in the Galloway society of Great Britain and Ireland Herd Book and will (hopefully) go on to produce many more pedigree Galloways.
Her mother, Lady Heather, was inseminated last September (along with Lady Zoe who is still waiting) with semen from a bull called Glenkiln Dynamite, who is no more. Furthermore, the AI company damaged the rest of the stock of his semen that they had and so their will be no more of his calves born. We lent our manure spreader to John Finlay (both books) and he paid us in semen (that must be a first!) from his bulls. We were to have ten 'straws' from Dynamite, but of the first six used, only Heather and Zoe got in calf, so John said not to use any more. We swapped to semen that he has imported from Australia for the remaining four inseminations - Globex Xplosive and Globex Quota. We know that Lady Olga is in calf to Xplosive. He is a Dun Galloway and we might get a lovely coffee coloured calf. We don't know yet about Beauty and Lady Gina - more later. Gina was also inseminated from Xplosive, but as this may be Beauty's (both book covers and books) last calf, I wanted it to be a Black Galloway and so we used Quota for her. I am hoping for a heifer from her.
