Wow! I was just wondering what to blog about today when I had a telephone call from a writer for Dumfries and Galloway Life - our very upmarket and glossy county magazine. She was asking to come and do a feature about the Ladies and us folks here at Low Arvie for the September edition - how cool is that!! She's coming on Monday morning!
As I thought, the weather has turned cool and rainy now that July has set in and may remain so for a week or two. The weather systems have begun to roll in across the Atlantic and, of course, we are first in line! Its not a worry though to us as the grass needs to grow again for our second cut in September, when the weather will be good again. R is putting more potash on the two big cutting fields and, hopefully will get them rolled before the next Atlantic rain comes later tonight.
The vet came yesterday and, sadly, neither Gina nor Beauty are in calf. I am very sad as it means the end for Beauty and she is my favourite cow. Unfortunately she has been struggling to get in calf for three years now and we cannot afford to keep her without her producing for us any longer. She is 13 years old and getting arthritis in her hips, so it will really be the kindest thing, but I was hoping for just one more calf from her. She is not the oldest cow, that is Zinnia who is 14 and has produced a calf every year since she was three and continues to do so. Of course, we also have Mandy now, who I blogged about before. She is someone's pet cow who we have inherited, and is slightly older than Zinnia, but she is not a true Lady of Low Arvie, being a Simmental cross.
