CHICKEN 8/4/2012 6:10:32 AM
I don’t disagree with Dan Cathy. I think that same sex marriage is for the birds — but not necessarily chickens.
Of course, as I am in no way threatened BY or unduly concerned about gay men or lesbian women, I enjoy Chick-fil-A sandwiches, etc., because they are, quite simply, the best money can buy, despite a law suit brought by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that claims chicken cooked at high temperatures contains PhlP, a carcinogenic — a suit that has not been legally resolved.
But I like their restaurants and counter-clerks. The establishments are sparkling clean (especially the rest rooms), and the counter-clerks are all 100% pure (I’m sure they float).
If there is one thing consistent at Chick-fil-A, it is — consistency! The last bite of your chicken sandwich is as good and tasty as your first bite of the last one — and it tastes as good as all bites in between.
There is a lot that can be said about their French Fries, too. And as well, their salads and desserts. Of course, it can be argued that ice cream is, after all, just ice cream, and root beer, dispensed automatically, is just root beer or Coke or Dr Pepper or whatever. But it is not. Maybe they line the paper cups with something.
Anyway, a treat at Chick-fil-A is something rare and unlike the experience one may find at other “fast food” eateries, of which there are a multitude in America. Most of the others are plain, dull and pedestrian — and they are open seven days a week. The chicken emporium is closed Sundays.
Dan Cathy told ABC’s Vicki Mabrey “by the time Sunday came, he [his dad, the founder] was just worn out. And Sunday at that time was not a big trading day, anyway. So he was closed that first Sunday and we've been closed ever since. He figured if he didn't like working on Sundays, that other people didn't either.” The younger Cathy then quoted his father as saying, “I don't want to ask people to do that what I am not willing to do myself.”
We here in the South have a great deal to be proud of: the SEC, low taxes, desegregation, unabated traffic jams, Margaret Mitchell, a church on every corner, the death penalty, a Bible-belt to help keep our pants up, Mark Twain, abundant Republicans, gun ownership from the cradle-to-the-grave, Huey Long and Stonewall Jackson — the list goes on and on.
But we also have Chick-fil-A, the best danged “fast food” known to man or beast. And like liquor, you can enjoy it Monday thru Saturday.
I am somewhat suspicious of allegedly pious people who seldom dine at Chick-fil-A but patronized the place in order to make a statement. If they are feeding their face but not their souls, they have become nothing more than Pillars of the Church — and as my sainted uncle aways preached, “pillars are what so-called Christians lean on when their piety runs thin.”
Plus you never have to fear that Chick-fil-A sandwiches are prepared by other than clean, wholesome, pure God-fearing people who read the Bible and bathe frequently and alone — or at least with other people who have either a vagina or a penis but never like yours (assuming you, too, have either a penis or vagina).
Was Dan Cathy right in speaking of his distaste for same sex marriage from the pulpit of his “fast food” empire and donate funds from his company’s profits to support his beliefs? Some say, Yes; as a successful businessman he had every right to express his opinion and do as he pleases with his money — same as Warren Buffet, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump or any other wealthy American icon.
Others contend that sexual choice is a Constitutionally protected subject that should be left to one’s individual conscience and interpretation; assuming each citizen is equipped to handle its subtleties and nuances and the wherewithal to get press coverage.
It is a debate that has an answer similar to: which came first, the chicken or the egg?
The answer, of course, is elementary, especially among we of the Intelligencia. We instinctively know which came first, the chicken or the egg? We also know that Dan Cathy also knows — and he, of all people, does not need the affirmation of his customers to tell him whether he is right or wrong. Should his “fast food” empire suffer because of his professed lack of sympathy and utter disregard for man’s humanity?
Or should we just simply chow down?
I for one do not know. But meet me at Chick-fil-A. I am loving it.
