Manchester on a Sunday

Manchester was grey, cold and windy not at all like the
early morning djs had predicted on the radio,according to
them we would be basking in summer weather.I turned out to
be a bit of an anti climax, and I had not dressed at all
for the winters cold.
The huge 19th century church of The Holy Name ,next to the
university,stretches out its great barn and spire of its
neo gothic body , while,from the belfry,peel the bells over
a largely secular Manchester.Its stunning interior crowned
by a stunning piece of Victorian stained glass at its most
magnificent,just above the imposing high alter.Its very
elaboratly Gothic sidechapels complete with their own
stained glass hidden behind arches and rows of burning
white candles in the midst of saints in stone. A mighty
organ bellows out to the pews below from the loft.Now home
to the Jesuits, it was when I used to frequent it
regularly, home to the Orotorians of St.Philip Neri.It has
a feeling of being very inner city but at the same time
full of cicumstance and occasion and has an aura of a
deeply spititual place as the traffic noisily runs past on
Oxford Road.
A host of Chinese restaurants offering a range of cheap
buffets line the streets going towards Chinatown a Turkish
eaterie a filling buffet of
lasagne,fetta,kebabs,meatballs,pizzas, and a wide variety
of sweet meats for only £9
Three drunken and very aggresive young men fall about in
Portland Street wielding full beer bottles-hard
collectivly,alone wimpish cowards.
Taxi queues as long as a massive centipede .as Man.united
supporters head to their big match and crossing the road a
couple in OTT leprecorn hats head towards the local St
Patricks parade
For some reason I did not feel hungry as I ate my lunch at
the Turkish Efes restaurant, but did as soon as I arrived
home,much to my annoyance.It was all another Sunday in
Manchesters grey streets scarred from its Saturday night
exuberance.
