A Castle in Angus

In 1973 my aunt and uncle moved into a flat in a tower in Glamis
Castle which lies near Forfar in Angus.The tower and part of
the estate were leased to them and
they lived there until 1981.My uncle had vinyards and gardens on the
estate which is quite unusual in Scotland. There were also
several cottages included in the lease but they were only
kept for storage,although it was possible to see how hard
and uncomfortable life must have been for the workers who
had once inhabited them.The castle itself a
mostly sixteenth century affair,with parts dating back a lo
t further,was once home to thet much maligned King of Scots
Macbeth and his even more maligned, infamous wife ,Queen
Gruich .It is currently owned by the Earl of Strathmore, from late Queen Mothers
family. It was There in the early twentieth century thatThe queen
Mothers grew up,her childhood home.It was also the
birthplace of the Queens sister,patroness of the arts and great socialite, the late Princess Margaret
.The drive way leading to the castle is guarded by two notable Scots monarchs,
Charles I and James VI.The whole place ouzes a sense of
time and history .
It was in the early seventies that I came to Glamis castle
for the very first time.I was to stay for long periods of time
regularly over the years.The turret in which lived my
relatives was a somewhat badly planned affair with
electricity and baths ,toilets etc, coming a long time
after it had been built.They fitted in awkwardly and often
most clumsily with the original layout.A long slim hallway
with no side doors led from the main house to the
bathroom in which was a large old fashioned bath totally on its own, in the middle of a
carpeted room,.The lone
light switch for the staircase and hallway stood in the far
end of the entrance hall so at night when you switched it
off you had to run all the way through the hallway and upstairs in the
dark.In Scotlands most haunted house this was a hair
raising affair!! To make it worse the bed has casters on
it and moved when you jumped into it ,all in the dark! The
Castle is rich in ghost stories. "A Castle in December" a
short story in my book "the Christmas Tree Of Tales" is
based on Glamis castle.It was a place where bumps in the
night ,never had logical explanations.The whole place had
a profound effect on me enriching my sense of history and
creativity,although at the time,in the 1970s,I was too busy
trying to compose pop songs at the piano in its rather
spacious kitchen
