and so to Easter

I awoke in my hotel room in Pembridge Square and looked
through the net curtains onto the gardens below.It was a
bright and sunny Spring day ,fitting for an Easter weekend
I went out into the morning and had breakfast at the Art Cafe
on Queensway, despite its name it is not at all
pretentious,no talentless, pseudo Bohemians to be seen anywhere, and is
a pleasant spot to sit outside and watch Bayswater go
by.Cosmopolitan laid back Bayswater. I then took the tube
up to Edgeware Rd where I had a substantial vegetarian
lunch at a small Lebanese Restaurant for only £10 which
included a glass of mint tea. As I turned into Saturday
afternoon on Oxford Street some thing told me no , not
today ,so,I retreated back into the tube and went back to
Queensway where,my taste for mint tea whetted.The lifts
at Queensway station were out of order ,which meant I had
to climb the stairs -an awful lot of them. I made my way to
the Arab tea shop across from the tube station,where the
smiling relativly new waiter assured me that he was an
expert at making mint tea ,after a ritual of pouring and me
sampling, I consumed the tea.I T WAS INDEED THE BEST MINT
TEA I have ever tasted!
That evening I returned to Aghia Sophia in Moscow rd to
attend the resurrection sevice which climaxes into the
anastasi the highlight of the Greek socio- cultural and
religious year. I thought if I got there by ten thirty that
I would be afforded a seat since my standing for some hours
the previous night had left me with somewhat sore feet,
When I ARRIVED AT THE Cathedral ,nearer eleven, there was
already a queue streaching along Moscow rd which only got
longer,not shorter .At around eleven thirty/midnight the
bishop proclaimed Christos Anesti and the Easter hymn was
sung as the assembled ,mostly young,kissed each other and
greeted each other with Christos Anesti /alithos Anesti. By
quarter past midnight the bulk of the crowd had gone home
and I was allowed entry into the church.I had not
intended to stay but as the night progressed into the wee
small hours
the whole place was endowed with a deep spiritual peace and
the choir sang beautifully.I STAYED UNTILL THREE AM WHEN IT
FINISHED ,I took communion and was given a bright red died
egg.I left and came out into the cold darkness of early
Easter Day as the others wandered off to have a traditional
meal .I so wanted to go to a taverna but was unsure if one
was still open at that hour.I reminded my self that it was
late and it was LONDON and best not go wandering about
alone unsure of exactly where I was going.I retired to my
hotel. I had been invited by a friend to his church in the
city for an Easter lunch . The organ and choir were
magnificent and the lamb wine and large selection of sweets
were a sheer gastronomic delight.I spoke to a woman who
often visited my grandmothers neighbouring village of
Edzell and was familiar with her cottage in a remote corner
of Angus , what a small world indeed !!While outside it
was cold grey and poured rain.Easter ,I always believe is
a wondeful story even for athiests,agnostics,humanists
because it is the ultimate in the triumph of sheer goodness
over evil and a manifestation that perhapse not always but
often, in the end, good wins over
bad as we go through life.
