A Tradition

I thought I would just write a few things in my blog about a
rather -very- dull rainy day here at Elmwood .A STEAK PIE IS
IN THE OVEN as I speak. A few bills awaited me when I
arrived back from the supermarket.What could be more boring
than that.When I was a child I had over twenty pen pals in
diverse parts of the globe.The exotic stamps and coloured
envelopes always awaited me when I came home from
school.They were often full of postcards , newspaper
cuttings and lots of exciting news about events ,popmusic
in their countries. It was through my European pen friends
that I got to know the pop scene of continental Europe of
the 1970s in detail and through them and a growing sense
of interest in Geography ,tavel and languages,an interest in
the Eurovision Song Contest.Why is this author writing so
much on this Eurovision? you may ask.Easy answer It has
been part of my life for many years.I always loved music
and was forced by my father to watch the 1966 contest .His
favourite singer Kenneth Mckellar was singing for the UK.
I have watched it every year since.it was in 1972 WHEN it
was held in Scotlands capital, Edinburgh, that i really
began to earnistly follow it.Since then it has become a bit
of a family tradition, with members of the family phoning
eachother to discuss the voting etc, etc, and also having a
small party with a few nice gateaux, pizza ,champagne.It
was also a time that Europe really got together and shared
a common culture.When my mother died two years ago we
found in her desk a logbook which contained a list of
countries and the votes she allocated them at her very last
contest,A somewhat moving dicovery.
As the 59th contest airs live over Europe tonight then i
will pour a glass of champagne and toast old faces and
absent friends.
in the supermarket I did not forget to buy some bubbly
