Visiting The Peloponnese

My novel A CAFE IN ARCADIA is set in the peloponnese ,a
peninsula, but since the building of the Corinth canal is
technically an island. It includes some of the most remote
and isolated settlements in mainland Greece.It has
stunning hillside and mountain scenery, in stark contrast
to the flat plains of northern Greece.Prone to earthquakes
many old settlements including,Megalopolis, Corinth and
Kalamata have mostly new cismic proof buildings ,usually
in the form of concrete.There are still however a good few
towns and villages that still offer traditional
architecture. Examples are the delightful towns of
Stemnitsa,Dimitsana,Andritsena which lie to the north of
Megaloplis and can be reached by bus direct from there.
That area of Greece is indeed full of green hillsides and
mountain pastures more akin to the tyrol than Aegean
Greece. Mani remains a somewhat insular untouched area of
the Pellopenese that draws few foreign visitors and clings
strongly onto its age old local traditions.Kalamata on the
other hand,rebuilt after the terrible earthquake of 1986,
draws a large international set of tourists with an airport
servicing flights to many Northern capitals. Its beaches
and coast a main attraction in summer for both Greeks and
tourists alike.
