Whitsun lost

Throughout England but not Scotland, today is a bank holiday
,the late Spring bank as opposed to the May day bank , which
of course in traditional British style takes place on the
Monday after 1st of May and never on May day itself. The late
Spring bank is a secular replacement of Whitsun tide which
celebrated the feast of Pentecost 50 days after easter when
the holy spirit descended on the desciples in Jerusalem and
the church was born.In England and other places it was
marked by processions of children dressed in white often
following their confirmation. As the nations of the UK ,
and in particular England ,became more and more secular
the feast and its traditions became less and less observed.
The current bank holiday was moved forward and no longer
coincides with Whitsun It was moved forward for financial
reasons.It now has nothing but secular conotations with
little more significance than to lie in late or have a
lazy day doing nothing.Again we see sadly the death of an
age old socio-cultural -religious tradition purely to show
exactly how secular we have become and how many in power
would like to see happen to Easter. The Jewish Sabboth was
enforced in history to remind Jews not only that it
was the holy day but as to manifest that they were no
longer slaves in Egypt or Babylon , where slavery did not
distinguish the days and day after day was a miserable
existance of work, work and more work. It is worth
pondering to think that if our current very secular society
which sees mass Sunday opening in most towns and frowns on
the celebration of holy days is turning us into little
more than slaves again.Slaves to consumerism and its all
secular deities.While part of a rich socio-cultural
religious heritage is lost forever.
