I am feeling much better today. A week in bed seems to have
done me good. I feel at least rested , Side effects however
are now I have backache due to lying for several hours at a
time this has led to a degree of insomnia.
In blogs like these I am never very sure wheather people want
to hear about the small mundane things that happen every day
or the big events on the news that are global, Sometimes
novels that do little but cover the daily goings on of
other people are often beautifully written and become
compulsive reading as each page progresses.Often those
daily happenings happen in a culture or strada of life
completly alien and different to our own ,but not always
.We are often fascinated by sentiments and actions in lives
similar to our own set in our very own local culture.
When sampling a new novel online or in a shop, I am
inclined to look at the style of writing and language used
to see if I like it or not rather than the plot. I often
see books with a subject or plot that is very up my street
but they are written in such a cold and clinical way that
the enjoyment is lost.Books that are translated from
another language into English often lose important integral
meanings in the translation or adaption.I think in
particular of the Russian classics as well as 20th century
Greek classics such as Zorba and the Fratricides,
When at university I was forced to read Jane Eyre, I felt
bored ,confronted with a story I knew so well.When I began
to read the chapters of rich langauge ,vocabulary and
metapphors which reflected the romantisicm , that so
reflected nature and its decline in the onslaught of in
dustrialisation,I could not put the book down.
It is June I have recovered from illness and perhaps its
time to return to the gym.I eat one more piece of my pain
au raisen and sup my capuccino as the late morning sun
shines down on my table in a cafe in central Leeds.
