My brother left for a working stay in Georgia,USA, yesterday
morning. He will fly from Edinburgh to New York and then
onto Atlanta. Being the great traveller I once was, it is hard
to come to terms with the fact that my younger brother has
arrived in the USA before me.He has seen the torch of liberty
and I still have to do all of that.The USA ,on my planned
travel itenery for many years, but something that has as
yet, never materialised. I have, I often think, a somewhat
idealised idea of the States ,a somewhat romantic view
developed from black and white Holywood movies of the 30s
40s 50s. All regular TV fodor as I grew up in changing
1960s Scotland. They bear I know little resemblance to the
reality of 21st century America or certainly as much as
modern London owes to the Ealing films of the early fifties.
In 2003 and in the five years that followed I visited Peru
and a host of other Latin American countries. It was indeed
a great adventure to travel to lima and fly over the Amazon
on a lovely KLM flight, with plenty of nice food and wine
. To actually walk in South America and view the diverse
angles of that vibrant continent was in itself an
adventure.I had long been fascinated by its long
turbulant history. I had studied its language and culture,I
had to pinch myself to see if it was all real. I went to
Brazil,Bolivia,Columbia, Venezuela and Mexico and I always
intended to go back and visit Paraguay,Chile or Argentina
but so far I havent.
