The morning bus to Halifax was already busy when I boarded it
at the stop just in front of my house.It has often occurred
to me while standing waiting on a bus how I should have
learned to drive years ago but I lived in London and then
Athens and it seemed both difficult and even unecessary to
drive in those busy and congested cities ,It was far easier
to get from a to b with the metro , so I never learned and
now I just cant be bothered and could do other things with
the expense spared.
HALIFAX looked bleak , boring and uninviting as I alighted
in the centre. The town which displays many grand
Victorian civic buildings and mills manifests its hey day
of prosperity and thriving industry,mostly gone.It has
recently tried to reinvent itself and a massive new complex
of restaurants and bars has been built right in its heart.
The bus journey back through narrow winding village streets
passed many grey brick houses from past centuries that
fitted self consciously into the 21st like the narrow
byways that were built before the car and intended for the
odd horse or coach.
I took a taxi to church on the edge of the centre but when
I alighted from the taxi I found the gates to heaven
firmly padlocked and the doors locked.There must have been
some pilgimage to another church wose saints day occurs and
the small congregation decanted for the day
there.Determined not to waist my journey I walked to
Frankie and Bennys to eat an early lunch and listen to
Italian -American artistes of the 50s and early 60s sing
their well known hits in an early 1950s New York film noir
ambience
Faces on the bus each with a particular story, many surly
and with a scowlish orientation. The older woman in front
of me with a spiky bobbed hair do held a tiny black dog,
full of character and personality with a hairstyle the same
as its owners. Wre they sisters in a previous life?
