The Stars And Stripes

Today is of course the fourth of July.I remember at school
we used to have these work boxes with comprehensions ,all in
different colours which we would chose to do and work
independently at our own speed .It was a far cry from the
often autocratic teacher centred classes that we were used to.
One particular comp. stood out from the rest and one that I
have always remembered.It was about the Star Spangled Banner
and the cicumstances it was written in, complete with a
drawing of a woman sewing the stars on the American flag.
My brother returned from Georgia via New York this week and
flew over the statue of liberty, a highlight of his trip.As
for me I attended an interview at the local university for
a job as lecturer in English for academic purposes,yesterday
My mind seemed to go blank and I became very aware of the
grammar/vocab I was using,Was I rambling on?needless to say
I was not successful in my quest.It was however nice to
wander into academia once more and it was a pleasant day out.
I have been regularly attending the gym, well three days a
week which is better than I have done in the last six month
I feel much better for it and am full of optimism.
This weekend sees the tour de France take place in this area
infact it passes my house.The town is decked in flags,
bunting and decorative yellow bikes while the main square
has been turned into a mock French village with cattle sun
flowers,and peasants drinking wine on their verandas.
Yesterday evening I had dinner at a Japanese restaurant in
Manchester.A truly Japanese place decorated in traditional
style. I ordered some delicious sushi and the exquisite and
potent plum wine .I imagined as I watched live Japanese TV
that I had gone to Tokyio -only for one evening
