Summer 2003 and some thoughts on today

It is a hot sunny Saturday morning.The weekend ,following on
a heatwave of a week where the country has basked in strong
sunshine and a sweltering heat that we had started to think
of as nigh impossible on these shores.We enjoyed a prolonged
and unparalelled summer of sheer heat in 2003.That year I
spent summer in Rio De Janeiro and left the high temperatures
here for what I thought would be as warm a winter in Brazil.
I landed in Rio in the middle of their coldest winter and
ended up with the flu.
What a destination Rio turned out to be.I had long expected
it to be a beach destination a costa type culture.This of
course formed part of the local culture and scenery but
there was so much more to Rio than this.It was in many ways
olde worlde,with an abundance of old traditional coffee
shops,elegant and serving Portuguese patisserie.Wide
graceful avenues and leafy green squares ran through the
city while surfers braved the wild waves of its coast.With
a lack of bridges to different suburbs a lot of internal
travel was done by ferry often at night and reflecting the
city lights in the dark water.The grave of Carmen Miranda
was flanked by graves on each side which bore the
surnames of my mother and aunt.The museum dedicated to the
legendary Holywood star exhibited her famous fruit
head-dress. While we were there a group of spritely
Brazilian pensioners ,on a day out , invaded the place and
danced and sang along happily to Carmens hits.Down South
America Way and all that .There was the park in Ipanema
where artistes brought there works to sell and where many a
fine bargain could be found among the canvases.Yes the
marvelous city,right enough.
I listened to the Sounds Of The sixties as usual when I
awoke this morning then went to post a letter in the warmth
of the day before looking for a cafe to have
breakfast.After consuming an omelette in such a place in
Birkby I walked past the still green of the cemetery and
past a group of people drinking in a pub garden,idyllic
,untill, my presence having disrupted the mundane,
was met with a few expletives, my passing with acidic
laughter and surly stares.Then I suppose if they need to
down alcohol at ten in the morning then they must be happy
content souls who have found the spring to the meaning of
life.Och Aman ,Aman !!!! An old eastern expression of woe
The Cemetery at Egerton is a sprawling most picturesque
affair especially in the summertime when the trees and
other foliage growing out of its ruined chapel are in their
prime.The greenery out of the lines of Blakes` Jerusalem, a most
English of scenes but where a large amount of stones are
of Poles and Ukranians whose final repose was here.Names
and people who after a couple of generations are confined to
forgotten.
The Commonwealth Games led the way this week as the more
pleasant of events in the newspapers and tele news.With a
quirky intro to Glasgow followed by performances by famous
Scots such as Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle while the late
Andy Stewart led from a video of the past.A South African
black singer sang an ode to peace in Dorric Scots and
gaelic lyrics to haunting melodies filled the stadium as
athletes paraded and the Queen in her northern kingdom
opened the event.An interesting evening all round.
I recieved an email today to say that the video trailer for
my novel is ready.Viewing it I believe whoever put it
together has done a fairly good job.
