The Road to Rocacorba

The tail end of hurricaine Bertha struck us torrentially and
blustery on Sunday and today was a mixture of sun and rain
with much cooler temperatures than of late.A draught comes
through the large bedroom windows at night and a quilt is
again required. I am busy trying to drum up interest in a
summer school. I have been somewhat imobile these last few
weeks due to back and leg issues and so the summer school is
much later this year and marketing has to be done hurridly
and at the last minute.We will see what the result is.
Friday sees the feast of the Assumption. Many years ago
when I worked near the Catalan town of Santa Pauo,at the
hamlet of ,Rocacorba, at the foot of the Pirraneas,I danced
the sardana on this festival in the town square. The
sardana is a traditional Catalan dance with Greek roots and
is similar to several well known Greek dances.I worked for
a strict religious order and used to climb down the ivy
outside my bedroom window every evening so noone would see
me and walk into town,a fair treck,to drink two cuba libres
buy a magazine, and relax for a couple of hours.This of
course was very much frowned upon and did not make me at
all popular with my Opus Dei bosses. That area for some
reason seemed to be populated by small farms with vicious
guard dogs who would sometimes escaped their chains and
would roam the road into Santa Pauo.One evening , I
encountered a rather nasty looking canine who took an ill
will at me and chased me almost all the way back to
Rocacorba. I managed to live to tell the tail(This is not a
spelling error).There was also the case of the young
sallow faced man with jet black hair and black clothes who
often sped past me on his motor bike at a dangerous speed
on my way back to my abode.On mentioning him to locals a
couple of them said a young man had been killed in a motor
bike accident some years before on the same road.Had I
seen his ghost or was it mearly another tale ,of a
different source,that had been invented to scare a young
naive foreigner ?
Cuba Libre can be made with half a tumbler of either gin or
rum and half of Coca Cola,with a slice of lemon on top.
