A Place To Lay My Head

Last Friday I returned home, after an evening out,around
11.30 pm ,only to find that my keys were not in my
pocket.They had fallen out, as I had taken out cash from my
pocket to buy a coffee on my return train journey.There
were however two neighbours who had copies in case of a
crisis.I only had to visit them and my problem would be
over-wrong! they had gone on holiday.I had not brought my
mobile with me and I was unsure of what to do.By this time
it was nearly midnight, I could hardly go banging on people
who I hardly knews doors so I parked my self on the steps
of my residence and gritted my teeth for a long night
ahead.Not only was it long and the steps extremly
uncomfortable but the temperature plummeted and with only a
summer shirt and jeans I was freezing!!Unable to sleep I
watched the changing colours of dark night sky slowly turn
to a pre dawn navy blue with the gables,roofs and chimney
tops of nearby houses beautifully silluetted.After an
agonising wait the grey skies of dawn complete with a birds
chorus, but I was in no mood to enjoy its charms,finally
arrived.At eight oclock I rang on the bell of a cordial
neighbour,who I woke up,she took pity on me and gave me a
breakfast and permitted me to decant to her home.Luckily,
one of the spare key holders came back from holiday at
lunchtime and things did not turn out as bad as they could
have.
Such an episode made me think what a luxury a warm bed and
a home were and how enjoyable a a hot cup of tea could
really be.Thought of those who slept on the streets flooded
my mind and I even remembered a much acclaimed TV drama
Edna The Inebriate Woman of the 1970s about a down and out
who searches for charities and night shelters to lay her
head down.How fortunate and how ungrateful we often are.
