Recent Events in Scotland.

It has now been almost a month since The Scottish referendum
which came out against seceeding from the union.With 45 %
voting in favour and 55% against.A massive media campaigne
in favour of the union headed by the BBC and many leading
newspapers, whose interests lay in the continuation of the
United Kingdom, had a prime role in the result,a role which
angered many nationalists. During the long run up to the
event there was much talk of expense,profit, wages,pensions
relocations etc,etc,yet there was dissapointingly little
mention of the demise of Scottish language,culture and
traditions.It deeply saddens me to see so many of them now
confined to the dust bin.The ridicule of Scots
language,looked down upon as a rough peasant like slang and
in an advanced state of neglect and decay .Its death knell
tolling loudly.This is a literary language displayed in the
classic works of Grassic Gibbon,Burns,Lady Nairn and
Macdiarmid among others and deserves respect and investment.
On the question of the monarchy several media outlets
informed us that an independent Scotland would keep the
monarchy the same as other commonwealth countries
have.Since the monarchy came from Scotland and has its
roots in the mists of Scottish history this was somehow
patronising a bit like saying to Australia it can keep airs
rock on independence because the rest of the Commonwealth
also admires it.The Duke Of Bavaria was ushered onto the
pages of German newspaper as another heir in waiting,unlike
Queen Elizabeth ,from the Jacobite line.One of the worse
courses of the NO camp was to try and drag the Queen into
the thick of it all.The BBC in particular seemend intent
on this focusing on remarks the Queen was supposed to have
made.Such reports,rumours whatever are extremly devisive to
the monarchy in Scotland.Not all unionists are monarchists
and a substantial amount of Nationalists are monarchists who
might have changed ideologies if The Queen had openly given
support to the No vote.The media have done the Queen no
favours.
For many NO supporters the referendum was an election of
great importance but to many on the yes camp it was
something they had waited for ,for hundreds of years.
This was evident in the often tearful scenes of lament the
day following the result.
So the United Kingdom lives to survive yet another day much
to the jubilation to the NO voters and the London
government.Yet there is a lot wrong with the union in its
present state .Scotland needs to be afforded respect within
the union not only devolved power. While the status quo
may have been for the time being retained with 45 % against
55% and a NO victory its worth remembering that Scotlands
biggest city voted for independence along with a sizeable
chunk of the population.The United Kingdom remains united
but it is indeed a very fragile union.
