And the Epiphany passes into the mundane

I t would seem that time in it`s ever rolling stream has a
custom of erasing the moǹths with its wet hands. No longer
are we wishing it was Christmas than time has wiped it from
our lives for another year.It has been at least two months
since my last entry and in that we have celebrated
Christmas and brought in another New Year , a shirtless
stranger,to the living rooms of our homes.I spent Christmas
in Broughty Ferry with my family,in a traditional
manner.Christmas now is a far cry from the close knit cosy
low keyed festival it was in the
1950s and 60s when simple tinsel stood out a mile in
the drab year long shop window displays in changing post
war Scotland.When along with festive milk bottle tops it
was probably far more appreciated than the lavish displays
in down town ville of today which are lavish and glittering
allyear round.Christmas in Scotland was celebrated until
the early years of the 20th century ,on the 6th of
January.The Gregorian Calendar coming far later to Scotland
than other areas of western Europe and the date of Auld eel
kept for many years after as a day of recieving
presents.This persists on some of the more remote of the
Northern Isles where they still keep 6th of January as a
local Christmas.In December 1880 The Dundee courier delared confidently that
although some parts of Scotland had started to keep the
fiest on the, 24th that Dundee and most of the country
continued to celebrate on the old date.The 6th ,these days
the Epiphany in the west - a night when decorations are
taken down and children dread = back to school,yet the
celebration has only just begun in places like
Serbia,Ethiopia,Egypt,Russia and Ukraine where it is
Christmas. Its always tempting to hold onto it but even
they too must bid it adieu after twelve days.
Some of you who know about the German music scene will
have heard of the death on the 21st of December at the age
of 80 of the singer Udo Jurgens,the Austrian singer who
sold more recordings than any other German language
artiste. Jurgens represented Austria three times in the
Eurovision Song Contest with three outstanding ballades
and won at his last attempt with Merci Cherie in 1966.It
is ironic that he should die in the only year that
Austria have won the contest since.Among his other great
hits was Griekische Wein- a song about gast arbeiter in
the 1970s.
It is always hard to return to work after Christmas,
harder than after the summer break .I was met with a week
of tough OFSTED inspections.Stressed to the point of no
return ,I survived but questioned if I really wanted to
continue teaching.Long expensive journeys and staff with
very different personalities from my own which I cannot
understand,which leads to clashes,tell me to leave.We
will see what 2015 returns. Happy New Year!
