Lady Day ,plenty sunshine and freezing weather

The cold bites at me as I sit on my computer.Yesterday I went
out for the first time in ages without a woolen cap.It
proved fatal because despite blinding sunshine and blue
skies it was bitterly cold.Now,do I know the meaning of
headache!However, it would seem that spring is here as the
daffodils shyly make their debut in the garden here at
Elmwood .
It has been many weeks since I last made a blog entry.All
consuming work with a great lot of lot of expensive
commuting has meant life being a case of returning home
late ,eating then going to bed and rising before the lark
with little time for much else.The pleasant light smile of
spring is most welcome.
While Mothers Day was celebrated last Sunday ,for those
lucky enough to still have one,the approaching fiest of The
Annunciation , which has a connection with Mothers day, will
largely go unnoticed and unobserved by the majority in
this country.Lady Day, as it was commonly known as ,falls on
March 25th.It was at one point much observed as it was on
this day that the New Year, under the old calander,began.It
often features in diaries as a quarterly.It would seem that
in the eyes of most of the public it has long faded into
obscurity along with other once notable red days such as
Lammas and Candlemas.When I lived in Greece however it was
quite a different story.The 25th is a public holiday and
holds a double celebration .One sacred and the other secular
While bells toll throughout Athens to celebrate the angelic
visitation to the Panaghia ,Greeks also celebrate there
national day for it was on this day,as every Greek school
boy or girl knows , in 1822 that the Greek flag was raised
in the Peloponesse and the fight for independence from the
Turks began.Parades of children dressed in their national
costumes of foustanellas and Amalias march through the
streets of every Greek town.For me it was always a
welcome break before the onslaught of the Easter holidays
just as the weather was begining to get better.
A couple of weeks back the UK chose it`s Eurovision
entry.The song is an unusual 1920s retro number.The
artistes are two amateur singers,Electro velvet,They
interpret the song perfectly and I wish them well in their
careers.It is however I hate to say another pathetic
attempt from the BBC.There was no gala night national
final as there was in other countries .We had to be
satisfied by pressing a red button after the Voice talent
show.While most of Europe are sending contemporary Gold and
platinum international established acts we send two amateur
unknowns.The days of The Beatles are long gone now Swedish
songwriters are writing chart toppers all over the
world.Even Australia have chosen one of their top acts to
sing for them.It`S HIGH TIME the UK came of it`s snobbish
pedistool and took an example from Sweden where the
national final reads a who`s who in popular misic
