Sun,Wind and The Islands

Today`s display of weather is really quite unusual.Bright
cloudless blue skies and hot sunshine dance a waltz with a
strong gusty wind similar to the Cycladic islands of Greece.
I recall the wind blowing the sand on the beach in Naxos into
a mini sand storm and the salad on my plate being blown away
by a strong gust one summers night on the harbour on the
island of Mykonos.Throughout history Greeks were not at all confined to the
borders of the modern Greek state ,not at all, most lived in
Asia or Africa along the shores of the Med. or the Black
sea.They came from diverse backgrounds bound together in one
cultural entity.They were a seafaring people who chose to
live next to the sea ,even sometimes in it.The population
exchanges of the 1920s ended all this with thousands of
Greek Christians arriving as refugees in the fairly modern
Greek state,while many Greek Muslims emigrated to the coast
of Libya.Mediterranean islands have formed a large part of
my life.Long before I ever set foot on a Greek island I was
familiar with the island of Sicily ,its ports such as
Catania and its Baroque towns such as Modica. When I lived
in Greece it was always my dream to spend a whole summer on
the islands.This was realised many years later when I was
in middle age when I was able to return for an extended
summer period .It was however not the same .I had grown
older for a start and the openings that are often so much
part of youth were no more.My memories of the islands a
priceless gem that I could not touch again and should not
try to do so.I often think I should start to discover the
Western Isles-the Hebridees and take more interest in my
Scottish cultural heritage
The heady effects of deep red wine and homemade pasta under
a Sicilian sky with the voice of Modugno in the background
singing Amara Terra Mia stll come back to haunt me in the
nicest way
