End Of Term and Days In Paris

It is Summer and just before the start of the Scottish
school holidays ,which commence shortly, I find myself in
Huddersfield with no holiday plans.My family are off to
Portugal while my neighbours are of to Paris for a week.
A strange coincidence in that the last and only time I was in
Paris was thirty years ago this week. It was on a study trip
with a French class which I had help organise and fund when
I set up and co-ordinated a langauge unit at a community
resourses centre in Dundee.We went by train and ferry and
arrived tired but eager to get to know the capital of
culture and romance.We saw the usual tourist fayre around
Notre Dame,The Eiffel Tower,Sacre Cour,The Arch De
Triumph,Les Invalides and the rest.We drank in traditional
back street cafe bars and always went to bed late but rose
very early at our accomodation in Le Pigalle and
Monteparnasse and Les Arles.The fact that we never really
caught up with our sleep was a massive factor in our
increasing bouts of irritation and illnatured behaviour
towards each other which cumulated in a falling out on the
last day and a tense train journey home ,again,made worse
by overnight,sleepless train journeys . We resumed normal
relations at our class the next week but somehow we never
got on as well with eachother as we had before the trip. I
always said I would return to Paris off season, but never
have.I suppose there were often other priorities other
agendas that took prime place.
Someone gifted me with three large polythene bags of
croissents and pain au raison just the other day and I`m
ashamed to say that I stuffed myself and have almost
finished the lot .This morning I made a tea and sat outside
and consumed a few in the warm morning sun as I read
"Peaches For Monsieur Le Cure".
As the Scot`s schoolchildren come off on holiday I remember
the feeling of dreamy freedom that, at the time would
seemingly go on for an eternity,but by August always seemed
to have ended too soon.
