Blossom and The Crimea :products of this May

The bright pink blossom that carpeted the approach to my
home ,Elmwood, has now started to go as we slowly slip from
Spring into Summer.The green leaves of the apple tree still
tower above my window although the plum tree that once
reached up to my first floor bedroom has long been chopped
down.How still and quiet it is to sit here in the late
morning under the pleasant sunshine.Last week however
,during the night someone entered the car park area in
front of my door ,smashed the car window and stole items
from inside.It was most unusual in this little enclave
which has managed to steer clear of such malice that has
affected other areas of the town.
At the bottom of the garden ,over the tall wall and in the
grounds of the palatial Ukranian Club the blue and yellow
flag of the much suffering Ukraine flies somewhat
jubilantly.
The Saturday of the Whit -Sunday weekend saw Ukraine come
triumphant through the Eurovision Song Contest with the
jazz singer Jamala singing the very political "1944" partly
in English and in Tatar .The blatantly political lyrics
dealt with the genocide of the Tatars of Crimea under
Stalins parahnoia at the end of World WarII which the
singers grandmother suffered in .
The new voting system gave us a new nailbiting standoff
never seen at Eurovision before.This year however there was
a deeply symbolic rivalry embedded in the last round of
voting when Russia and Ukraine battled it out right to the
last second for the Grand Prix.The Russian superstar Sergei
Lazerov ,well known all over the former Soviet Block,was
tipped as the winner with a strong up tempo number
accompanied by plenty of technology.While Australia had
received top marks from the Pan European juries ,Russia
received the highest votes from "THE PEOPLE"(tele-vote)
but both votes lumped together gave victory to Ukraine
.Russia was furious in what they and some others saw as a
Russian stitch up and an endorsement of an already negative
image of Russians in the West.It was easy to comprehend
the emotion and sentiment in the Ukranian entry sung so
passionatly and in such an emotive manner.It was most
likely that politics had however pulled Russia down with
what was a very credible and powerful entry and more
winning material.It seems also to have ignited yet more
friction between the two former Soviet states and fanned
the flames of more fire .Jamal`s quest,to inform the world
of an almost forgotten genocide ,has succeeded and this
day in KIev and Crimea she is hailed as a true patriot.
My own personal vote went to the beautiful balled from
Israel ,which rather unfairly ended half way down the score
board as did several other strong entries.It was a
spectacular and very enjoyable production and in every way
one of the best ever Song contests ever.
The UK song sung by the likeable lads Joe and Jake who came
to light through The Voice talent show,despite getting top
marks from Malta in the end only managed third from last.
What is more tragic is they got little or no support from
the BBC ,who once they had served their purpose recieved
almost no airplay after the event .Shame on you BBC.
Of course this year the Beeb rammed it down the publics
throats that the contest was nothing more than cringeworthy
saccarine to only be classed as "BONKERS" and of no worth
whatsoever .I fail to understand how so called educated
academics who present BBC current affairs programmes cannot
see the Song Contests value as its importance in forming
European identity and some of the good material and quality
acts that have graced its stage .Next year Kiev and what an
interesting event that will be.
I bought a jar of mince meat ,popular at Xmas and much
reduced in Tesco this week. I consumed it gladly on two
warm slices of toast and melting butter.What an original
and delightful little treat it was.
