Poor Cow

The film "Poor Cow" a classic of British 1960s Realism has
recently been re-released in cinemas throughout the UK.The
film based on a novel by Dunne and screenplay by Ken
Loach .It stars the young actress Carol White who played
Cathy in the highly acclaimed TV drama "Cathy Come Home" of
the same era.It centres around the life of an 18 year old
girl ,Joy ,who having run away from home marries and has a
child by Tom a small time criminal who maltreats her until
his encarceration.She then goes to live with her Aunt Emm
in her tiny flat in East London.Aunt Emm is an ageing
prostitute.Joy meets and falls in love with Dave who treats
her with kindness but their happiness is short lived ;Dave
,played by Terrence Stamp,is sentenced to twelve years in
prison but Joy continues to contact him and dreams of the
day he is free.Her life descends into one of disreputable
modelling jobs and promiscuity.She eventually returns to
Tom on his release for the security of her son but still
harbours a deep love for Dave.
Queenie Watts steals the show with her performance as the
dry ,East End Auntie scraping a living in an East End slum.
Queenie Watts was one of the greats in British television
and film of the 1960s and 70s and is much underated.Her
best role being that of an avid, ageing fan of 60s pop in
an Old peoples home in the play Waterloo Sunset.She also
appeared in other films such as "Up The Junction"as well as
in many popular TV programmes including Dixon Of Dock
Green and Steptoe and Son as well as comedies like Romany
Jones and Yuss My Dear .Queenie was also a Jazz singer who
sang regularly at The Iron Bridge Pub in East LOndon which
she ran along with her husband Slim.Queenie`s characters
often manifested themselves as dry but witty ,hardened by
life but still with a kind heart.We lost this great actress
and Doyenne of true East Endness far too young ;Queenie
having died in the 1980s aged only 53 but films like Poor
Cow stand as memorials to and proof of her exceptional
talent.
