It's actually an idea that I stole from myself. Hello Good People,
Those that know me know that I have a lot of unfinished projects. I'm an Aries, and that is one of their traits. Starting strong, but struggling to finish.
It doesn't help that I have ADD, maybe with a bit of hyperactivity. I never got diagnosed, and I don't take any medication for it.
I do have some finished projects, but I also have a knack for brainstorming new ideas. They tend to come at me with a flourish, and then quickly putter out sort of like a sugar high.
This new story idea is something that I recently brainstormed which stems from a game idea I had a while ago which would involve the four basic elements plus void and energy.
If you read my blog about the twelve color card game I'm designing; it evolved from that original game idea, and the story is stealing its title, E.F.W.A.V.E., which is an acronym for: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Void, and Energy.
Now, most of us are familiar with Captain Planet, and I want to start by saying that this story idea is not inspired by that. It's just borrowing that trope. I never liked that cartoon. I think its target audience was younger than I was while it aired.
Back when I was focusing on my TTRPG, I dabbled with an idea of creating a module for the game of an adventure based on the idea of playing characters, each having a maxed out sense, i.e. vision, hearing, etc.
This time around, it's based on six characters each having powers related to one of the six elements.
Now, the reason that I'm posting about this is that, I managed to brainstorm five of the characters, but I'm struggling with the sixth. I'm humbly asking for your help.
Interestingly enough, I went to write this blog yesterday, but while going through the notes for it, inspiration struck. I suddenly had visions of how the story is to begin, and this time, I allowed some of it to evolve.
Before we continue, however, if you read on, there will be spoilers. Also, the only thing I can offer for recompense would be a credit in the book.
So far, the fantasy setting is pretty basic. I'm letting the story dictate the setting. Society is in Medieval times, but not in a dark age. There has been a long peace between The Three Kingdoms, each of which consisting of several humanoid races like, elves, dwarves, and humans, although, like with my TTRPG, all humanoid races are playable races.
I am open to a unique race, but here's what I have so far:
Earth: Bregan Crestman, a male goliath (half-giant) who was taken in by a small village of gnomes.
Fire: Danwe Silverthorn, a female elf who discovers her powers by accidentally setting her village on fire, which turns into a forest fire.
Water: Finndrel Goldwind, the Squallrider, a male human swashbuckler who secretly uses his powers to aide in piracy.
Air: Vi`el Qir'Val, a female rakshasa of the lion variety
Void: Kaida Tetsuyo, a transgender male half-elf ninja.
As you can see, some of them don't have origin ideas, but part of yesterday's inspiration dictates that they will all have been orphaned at birth. They were also all born at the same time and in the same spot as part of a ritual that bestows upon them their powers.
After they are born, the mothers and the seer performing the ritual are killed by an antagonist that is not the main villain. Someone I plan to use to add drama when needed. Most likely some kind of sociopathic noble whose ego is easily threatened.
The main villain is known as the Dark One. I know it's not original, but the concept of the story is that, twenty years after the six are born, they start to discover their powers. Kaido comes first, where something unavoidable is threatening his life, and he unintentionally blips himself into The Void. The very place to where the Dark One had been banished nearly a thousand years prior.
The Void is literally a dimension of nothingness, and Kaido immediately begins asphyxiating.
The Dark One is a sentient entity that was created long ago by Greyv, the God of Death and Rebirth that once tried to annihilate all living things. It was made of shadow, and doesn't require any sustenance, allowing it to live in this empty place.
During the forty seconds of agony, Kaido manages to answer some yes or no questions asked by the Dark One before the Dark One helps him to return to reality, though with a piece of the Dark One taking a piggyback ride.
This piece of the Dark One takes over a random human's body and changes his name to Don Rake, which is an anagram of Dark One. He goes by Mr. Rake, and gets the six characters together to go on an adventure that they think will save the world, but is really a scavenger hunt for the items needed to perform the ritual for the Dark One's release, and thusly comes the final battle.
I like the idea of a cast of characters like in The Umbrella Academy, where there is often animosity between them, and sometimes [that animosity] is detrimental to their progress, or even their ability to work together.
The concept and setting are, so far, fairly open-ended, so hopefully you won't feel too constrained when designing an idea for the character with Energy powers.
Please know that, any ideas are greatly appreciated, even if it's just a name. Sometimes that's all it takes to inspire me. I'm really not sure what to expect, but I would like to hear why you think your idea fits, if you would be so inclined.
