When I was a sophomore in high school, I heard a radio commentator talk about how while Santa Claus was for children, the broader scope of the Christmas holiday was for adults. I didn't agree with him then and I agree with him less today. True, grownups may appreciate the meaning of the holidays, but children seem to do a better job of keeping it. When was the last time you heard a child complain about the commercialism and pace of the Yuletide?
Santa Claus is for children,
Christmas is for adults.
So tell me why we adults
open our socks and shirts,
then go about our way?
A temporary bit of
materialistic joy, you say,
but one which lasts forever
in our hearts.
The wonder, the joy,
the wait for Santa's sleigh
is lost on grown-ups who
moan "it's just another day."
The glad tidings of Bethlehem
seem to fade away, except for
those who know the Christ the Babe became.
Santa Claus is for children,
Christmas is for adults who
sit in loneliness and dwell
on their electric trains.
Santa Claus is for children
and so is Christmas Day,
since we adults don't want it.
If adults did not lose their magical childhood, the world would be a better place. Be as children! Thank you for this.

Steve, this is very well written and filled with truth. Sadly, many adults have forgotten the significance of Christmas and the joy that this day should bring. Too much importance is placed on materialistic goods. Best wishes to you! ~Z~
