Looking to the sunset, I'm
intrigued by the awe of
natures beauty. The setting
sun seems to be disappearing
into the oceans depths.

Never have I imagined so
many shades of orange dancing
on a rippling mirror.
Quite a perfect place... A moment
of serenity and solitude...

I take a deep cleansing breath.
The gentle breeze and salt air
give my senses a feeling
of profound virgin purity.
Total oblivion consumes me.

A large seagull stands over his dinner
picking the remnants of what
was once a horseshoe crab.
A smaller, yet persistent, gull keeps
taunting him, hoping to get his share.

Glancing back to the horizon,
just as tints of orange
begin taking on hues of purple,
I realize the first stars of evening
 beginning to illuminate the sky.

Sitting on soft warm
sand, heated by the setting sun,
I close my eyes and try to
imagine life without this
kind of peace. A life without hope.

Perhaps future generations
will sit on this very spot and
witness all that is beautiful in
the world. Maybe, just maybe
they can say, ' I helped make it so.'

It is easy to see how this could be chosen for publication. I was drawn in completely by your words and it allowed me escape and respite for a while. Poetic mastery at its best. Congratulations

Paul, missed your work. This is excellent. If this is the "Freedom"
that is being published, I can understand why. An outstanding poem. Bill

Loved this write, Paul; so acutely observed and simply stated - and a real sense of the peace which you identify as the distillation of hope. We can feel so small when we commune with the largeness and grandeur of nature, and yet our sense of oneness with it and the way our lives are inextricably interwoven with it can bring on this deep feeling of harmony. And the desire and responsibility we can feel to perpetuate this for those who come after us is truly inspiring!
