What is said about the seeds of the maple can be said about all seed....
The Whirligigs spiral down
from the crown of the maple trees
spreading the seeds thither and yon.
Unchecked lawn and garden
rapidly become a sugar bush.
Not all survive, the squirrels
fill tummy and cheek with
the year's first high caloric
meal. Those that sprout
often crowd each other out,
their decaying parts manure
the soil for the survivors.
This wild riotous eruption
of life’s profusion stuns
the observer with its sheer
wasteful abundance.
Abundance but not
really wasteful
for nothing of this is lost,
rather it is shared,
passed around,
translated into a myriad
of different forms providing
sustenance for many
and wonder for those
can see
