Its Hurricane Season

My son lives in Brandon, Florida and other family and friends are in the path of a hurricane on the Gulf. No one is ever fully prepared for hurricanes. They wear a different dress each time they call.
My thoughts are for the safety of others when nature turns a power play upon man.

Its that time again folks when anxiety 's plagued
The eyes to the south and the next tropical wave
Who has the water..stock piles of canned goods?
Tape up the windows and head for the woods!
What's in the category ...its all bags of wind
Tropical fevers.... roofs blow and bend
Birds start out northward if they have any clue
Nature warns man from clouds gray and blue
Sixth sense of the sparrow to dodge the wind
Food for their journey... babies to tend
Pet food for animals locked in the garage
Or taken on journeys not use to the voyage
Kids packing games and books for the trip
Anxious Moms warning "too much and it rips"...
Bags that portrude... heirlooms of life
Torn yellowed pages of everyday strife
Add to this mixture the business man
Financial empire caught in his hands
All in a briefcase, packed in the car
Albums and birth things from days still ajar
Wonder of nature this big bag of wind
Cleansing the coastlines ...her way to mend
The path of mankind that has taken his turn
Then gives into her and this tropical burn
It blows with a vengence... it soaks to the bone
For those less fortunate it takes away homes
Hurricanes coming... insurance in line
Haven for aged ones their folk tales to pine
For "those were the days when..I road out Camille"
Lived to respect nature and know how she feels
Get to higher ground, take the heed of the snakes
Check gas in your auto and watch out for wet brakes
Get out sirens warn... of impending disaster
Get going right now.... try harder...move faster
The clouds turn to mountains of angry chiffon
The winds start to hurt as they form a bond
Like Sherman's march its time to close mouths...
Its coming for sure this march from the south
Take heed all you flatlanders...run for the hills
Get all of your treasures and even the wills
For no telling when nature will finish her visit
For now just go safely til its over...or is it?
That's one hurricane compared to the rest..
Each one has a character much different at best
Its a game of chance calling and odds where or when
When nature visits with her call up of winds.

The flow and rhyme in this are absolutely perfect- I had to comment on that first, because this poem is so well-written, and that should be said before personal comments:) Up here in New York, I always feel bad for people in Florida because they get the hurricanes first before sending the tropical storms up to us. You really summed up all angles of a hurricane, well done.

How vividly you paint the portrait of this chilling Mistress
of Nature. Truly terrifying.
God be with your relatives and all who live in those areas.

Susan, this is such an exceptionally well-written and well-crafted creation of timeless poetry done in its finest! I do hope everyone who lives in those areas, which are prone to such horrific events, manage to get out of harms way and remain safe and alive! My thoughts and prayers go to all of them, and I, like you, do have family living in the great state of Florida, inside West Palm Beach, and friends scattered throughout the beautiful state, and I always worry about them during the Hurricane Season. I guess that’s the price some are willing to pay to live their lives in Paradise! Thank you for sharing your remarkable talent. Be well and stay safe my friend. Outstanding work!

Truly hope your son and friends remain safe, Susan.

My brother lives on the Florida coast, and he has had to evacuate his family, and leave his home behind 3 times already, never knowing what he might find left when they return.

Hurricanes truly are an awesome and devastating aspect of Mother Nature.
