New Age Mother Hubbard
Old Mother Hubbard went to the market
For her dog and she to fetch...
The best she could do for her and Old Blue,
With her Social Security check.
Was to come away with the buy of the day...
A case of horse mutton and grease...
For she and Old Blue would partake of this too,
To leave just enough cash for the lease.
Her check could not buy but a piece of the pie...
Though appetites longed for the taste ,
Of real food for once with buds that did jump...
Desires for a steak with no waste.
For that would be gone with the small bit of bone,
And Old Blue would sit up and bark.
And shake paws for you and leave not a clue...
Their voices as those of a Lark.
For a proud one was she who never could be,
Humbled for the sake of a warm...
Meal now and then that would have been,
Given for charity's sake..but then..
What the heck...write her a check.
Give your poor heart a brake...
For she is to you...what she is to Blue,
A spirit with charity...who,
Gives of herself and tightens her belt...
And thinks of others like you.
Who gave of themselves as she did one time,
When money did flow with the wind.
She gave and she gave till there came the day,
Her time to take ,did transcend...
The ages of time and endings that rhyme.
For checks and for hunger, she too...
Would long for the days when checks often paid.
For food for she...and Old Blue.
A plight of over 70% of, retirement age, people, in our country.
The insinuation, of providing for our future, from the beginning, and each check, on which, we saw the deduction. Kept many, from opening, retirement savings, or putting , a nest egg, aside. But, these required sacrifice, and discipline, not well received, words, in these self centered times. So, the misleading, mystique, the ostrich emulating, attitudes, and the lack of planning, is as much to blame as the system.
There are over 20% of the 70, however, that in recent years, fell prey to the averice, and loose controls, when companies, began ravaging and pilfering, their employee's' retirement plans. Or were fired, just before, their plans became, vested.
It's like Peter said, in a review of one of my writes:

A great depiction of the plight of those only on SS. Last year, my Mom joined that growing crowd. Fortunately, she's got a couple of rich sons who'll never let her cupboard get bare.

The so called COLA which is rigged in the governments favor lest they give you too much in your SS checks. Prices have escalated but yet the government says there is no inflation. Have they seen the price of fruit and vegitables over the past three years rise without stop. I saw an orange costing a $1.25 for one and plums selling for 2.95 a pound and grapes 3.99 a pound. A chuck steak, the cheapest kind used to sell for .79 cents a pound two years ago now it goes for 3.25 a pound. And of course there's the price of gasoline that seems to have no stop in how high it will go. But your SS check gets increased just 3% and how far can that take a retired person. Great write Susan Sorry for my rant.
Your poetry is well done. It sings of sorrow and deprivation. Tough reading about such a situation. On a personal view; too many of such cases include children who don't help out - parents, grandparents or other relatives. Selfishness is the bigest disease rampant in America. The young seem to believe that they owe nothing to those who got them through a lot of hell as infants and children. Now, there's a topic for you, Susan! - Thank you for this. - Bill
Whimsical indeed but the sad part it is all too true as well, far too many seniors are barely subsisting on the checques they receive. These include widows, veterens, mothers and dads. Their pride may not let them turn to others foe help and instead they do rsign them self to one poverty meal a day...more please?

If this is your answer to my challenge answer, you surpassed yourself. You are right. Politics is best taken with a grain of humor. Makes swallowing all the b.s. easier. Great!
