Guess what little four-legged creature got into my garbage last weekend....
Sunlight drifts through mossy strands
From gnarled fingers of a mighty Oak's hands
Creatures calling from darkened holes
Infant fuzzies...warm and bold
Three pairs of eyes with masked delight
Clicking their greetings...welcoming night
One bold little infant, his claws hung out
To taste this challenge and walk about
Each fingered grip is carefully stroked
For new nerves calling on this mighty oak
Testing nature...the dare is here
Little masked creature crawling there
A tad too high then a shrieking call
"Momma come get me...I'm not this tall! "
She beckons to her "batman" with soothing clicks
"Back on down Sugar...and do it quick!"
Siblings echo Morse-coded calls
"Strong tiny masked one, please don't fall!"
Momma and me with knuckled breaths
Pray for this baby with heart felt depth
Finally secure with others in tow
Momma Raccoon...striped tail a flow
Gathers her babies, safe for this night
Til dare calls the wee ones for another test flight
I remember those little rascals...we were in a wedding in Ohio once, and some raccoons got into the garbage after we were done and had gone inside. It took three hours to clean up the mess they left the next day! Wonderfully delightful write, Susan; very well done!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D
I am well aquainted with the antics of batman. They are adept little creatures; closed garbage cans lids, dumpster lids, are no match for their prying little hands, if you have garbage, they will come. :) A delightful write of ring tailed wonders. Well done!
I love these four legged batmen rascals. A few summers ago I helped raise three little batman orphans when their momma got run over by a truck. One of them still visits late at night.
wonderful poem! raccoons are resilient (and cute) creatures ... i once saw one who made his way from upstate only to find himself up a tree in downtown manhattan ... had the entire block in awe ...
They are intrepid little creatures aren't they. Had some folks over one night for a cook out and Momma brought the whole brazen family.
Loved it Susan!

Cute little bugger, ain't he/she/whatever. Always had a special feeling for racoons, it's just because the look so . . . cute . . . Just like you.
A marvel of an experience and insightful write
Some times we get the most marvellous surprises in life..
We never what, is just around the corner..
Lovely picture of a babe racoon..
This reminded me of what we have to do with our children eventually. Like little baby birds, the parents finally have to push them out - either they fly or they die.
This was a warm and relatable write for me Susan. Well done!
