Tears For Our Rain Forests

This photo shows the stripped earth of the rain Forest where trees once stood proud.

I read today that our rain Forest is in worse shape than first thought.
I wrote this many years ago and it is still just as dire then as it is now. WE, each one of us, must save this earth for our own children and grandchildren. It's our responsibility.
Thank you!

Poem Artwork

Think of this earth as a body
The Rain Forest being the heart
The threat of a deadly virus
Slowly tearing her apart
The rain mixed with pollution
Each tear, acids of pain
Sliding the mountains downhill
Scarring her pretty terrain
Trees being mowed down for paper
Baring her form to the sun
Drying her skin into wrinkles
Leathering under our gun
The constant threat of this battle
Her scars go to the bone
Thoughtless dangerous pollution
Opening up the ozone
She who once was a beauty
Slowly eaten alive
Tortures of mans only duty
Jackknifed into this dive
She's going downhill faster
Than we who believe can plant trees
She hunches her back to disaster
When more of us need to believe
She really needs a make-over
Her body needs the repairs
We have to complete in our lifetime
The beauty that we took over years
Give back to her heart its true beat
The one that makes us believe
That she who gives everything to us
Won't have to wear pain on her sleeve
We need to think of this lady
To give and not falter her trust
We need to think of her blessings
Think hard of what's under her crust
To feel as I do her pain
To live each day close to life
To feel the cries of the Forest
To make a good go for her strife
It won't take long to tender
It can happen if we attempt
To pull our resources together
The Rain Forest is giving us hints
Her heart is in need of a by-pass
We clogged her arteries and veins
With polluted fires of shaven forms
Apathized her answer to rains
Now she sobs to us with a pity
Very few hear her silent fears
The heart of the Rain Forest weeps for us
We have minutes...while we took from her
...years

I hadn't seen this when I began to write yesterday. When I was in Bangkok in 1977, the steets were full of trucks of teak from the north. I'm so glad they stopped that insanity. Brazil is another matter.

When we visited Yellowstone it had just been devastated by the fire. I cried and begged my husband to LEAVE; the park was in mourning. The smell, the nakedness, the stark contrast and lack of shelter had chased the animals away. It was heartbreaking!
Men are raping earth for riches; only men can stop it!

Write on ...

I remember trees ... once. Isn't that sad, how mankind's greed has broken Mother's back? Her spine's collapsing, and no one gives a rip. Excellent expression, Susan, I fear it's too late ...

You and I seem to be on the same sad page today, Susan. I'm posting a poem this morning about the very same tragedy after reading that latest State of the Forest Report.

If only millions more cared, we might be able to make a difference. But these very sad days, it almost seems like it's already too late - far too much apathy, callousness, and profit driven greed in our world today.

Your words sound the alarm! We are a shameful bunch; full of greed and ego to the point of not believing in our own future. With your voice and others, growing, perhaps, we can be a force to force all the dumb bastards in the US and the world to hear the warning!

Such a profound piece of writing Susan, Our Earth is the Mother of us all, We have taken so much from her, now it's time to give back, no-one can ignore this. We must save the Earth whatever it takes in order for ourselves and our children and our Grandchildren to go on living, These are critical times, This is a pivotal point in the existence of us all. We all must try to stop the abuse of Mother Earth. If I could I would broadcast this poem to every network in the world and translate it to every language. This is the most important issue of our time.

A beautiful poem! We have done so much damage and yes we do need to do something. It's unfortunate that the oil companies have so much power in government since they are a major contributor to damage. I whole heartedly agree with you on this one.

Stay southern and keep writing.

You pen this plight in a way that makes it easy for all to understand. Sadly, in the name of commerce and growth - we are loosing that which truly sustains our life. I, like you, hope that this 'rape' will be ended while we still have a beautiful Rain Forest.

God bless you. Kathy
