This touches me because I did the same dumb thing back when I was a kid trying to serve my country and venture out. I made it out of boot camp and survived. Another fellow recruit did also, I witnessed the beating he took first hand, live and in living color. The motivation he recieved did help him. He was one of the first to qualify in our swimming class.
A young man, just a young kid. Join the Marines, he couldn't swim good. He was beat and abused by the drill instructors, and his fellow Marines.
Eventually he drowned, never made it out of boot camp. His family stated on the news, "he was a weak swimmer." Yet none of them, tried to stop him.
I thought it foolish for him to go on such an adventure.
But I feel in my heart, he is just as much of a hero as any other Marine.
I also had a very similar experience - a fellow overweight recruit passed out and died out on the obstacle course - in 98 degree heat - and all several people had to say was, "He was too fat anyway."
And like you, I will never forget this young man - he had 'more guts' (the good kind) than a lot of folks I know.
