Bride of Gloom

Daddy gave me away too soon.

Girl in the sweeping gown
weeping?
We've come a long way
Hear the music; hear the song
Smile on this day
Clutching Daddy's arm
Glide down the aisle
In my dreams
He gives me away
From his earthen tomb
I'm a bride of gloom
Can anyone else see?
Daddy walking beside me
Girl in the sweeping gown,
Turn your frown around.
Although your Daddy sleeps,
He lives within your heart . . .
Where you nevermore shall part.
Your brother strides in place
Keeping the pace
Girl in the wedding gown
weeping?
With Daddy's blessing
. . . Take your groom
and banish all gloom.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
