I Could

I could, if I wanted, make you cry
though I’d much rather see your sweet smile.
The heart that’s aching, breaking, is mine.
Can’t you see my tears cascading down … all around …
as our love, our lives, passes on by?
Too often we clash, rash, exchange harsh words.
Why not let our differences go by?
You put me down, stomp me a’ground
and never say you’re sorry for the sound
of my tears a falling all around.
I could, if I wanted, say good-bye,
start living my own life over again
Would you hear my foot falls, squalls, the door close
or would you fail to even notice?
Would you sit at the table waiting
for a meal that would never be served?
You wouldn’t miss me only chores I did.
You put me down, stomp me a’ground
and never say you’re sorry for the sound
of my tears a fallin' all around.
I could, if I wanted, lay down … die,
need to be me instead of living a lie.
When did you leave? I just now noticed
that silence hung—frozen stiff—in the air.
I finally can breathe without a care.
You left behind some precious mem’ries
but also left legions of miseries.
You left me down, stomped me a’ground
and never said you’re sorry for the sound
of my tears cascading all around.
. . . . . You never said
. . . . . . . you were sorry but ….
. . . . . . . . 'nough said
. . . . . . . . . go on ahead.
