Jazz Man

Dedicated to my friend Bob Fanelli.

A little past midnight,
unmindful of the icy weather

outside the after-hours club,
Bobby warms the joint

with a long sweet ride
on his alto sax,

cruises in and around
a driving rhythm section,

replicates, articulates himself
in complex multitrack duets

and four-part harmonics,
assimilating an astonishing

repertory of musical composition
and improvisation, equally

at home on alto or tenor,
a capella ballads, a rhythmic

Latin lick, or a mellow one-man
Four Freshman chorus,

something blue, rhapsodic,
or a little jam, a jazz original,

true to his own musical line,
the thrust of his unmistakable beat,

accenting the musical poetry
of his engaging style

as his hot swinging sax
slices the bitter night.

"... a mellow one-man Four Freshman chorus ..." blew me away. Jazz lovers understand this. But we also remember Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich and Maynard ... they will be gone forever when the last old music elephants join the bones in the yard, noodling over eighth notes on keys yellowed like old teeth. Bravo.

I smile at your term "...hot swinging sax..." for that is surely is! But my fave is Herbie Mann on the flute...his rendition of Battle Hymn of the Republic is...WOW! Your 'dedication' to B. Fanelli is "swiging" too, Gene :o)

Title caught my eye, it is a title from a song played in the late 60's or early 70's called Jazz Man. Wonderful poem!
