Rendezvous with Anne Sexton

I pretend I'm walking in afternoon fog,
moving through tall pines near the ocean
A hand takes mine, a voice whispers,

This hand is lonely for something to touch
that touches back. I'm almost certain
Anne Sexton's hand is leading me

into the forest near Dingley Dell, she says,
up a path that wanders beyond the lost moon,
a path in search of itself. In her world, says

this stylish poet, everyone walks naked. She and I
pause in the soft yellow grass by a lily pond.
Unstrung, she mounts me and

abruptly dismisses me, a fabricated prince
discarded inside the moist green hide of a frog
in need of a hug. Anne calls me Old Waddle.

My tongue snaps at the dank air before I
leap into her lap and observe floating on the pond
the wing of a dragonfly.

No one was more straight forward, wide open, unaware and uncaring of who did or didn't like her work or her person. Bold and sad, honest and lusty was Anne. Your poem did her proud, Old Waddle.

Gene - I'm familiar with Anne Sexton's poetry and picked up a few references such as " Old Waddle. " may have missed some others but the poem spoke to me anyway especially,

a path that wanders beyond the lost moon,
a path in search of itself.

and the wonderful imagery of the dragonfly wing contrasted with the "fabricated prince" turned to frog.

I love:

My tongue snaps at the dank air before I
leap into her lap and observe floating on the pond
the wing of a dragonfly.

I'll be thinking of the implications more than once. - David

egads!
anne would be so pleased.
anne would be so daring.
reminds me of her 'furies' writes and. . .. this certainly sounds like a madwoman, encased in a bawdy tendril'd faerie realm that only she invented, whereonly she knows the end of the play; she brought you in with a 'once upon' and you drew her out with a dreamy film noir. ..
"everyone walks naked"-- -- good merciful heavens...id like to think [as anne knows] not only does that mean sans clothes, but without our facades, without our walls, without outlines of ourselves....so that everyone is allowed to SEE who we really are, who we really mean to be. .. .
but of course, im not anne.
O dearest .. .. this is Sosoooososooo good.
makes me wish.
period. just wish.

Dear Gene,

Exactly the reason we shouldn't spend all of our life in captivity...so as not to miss a chance meeting a path through the woods, sea, and sky with a guiding philosophy of Anne Sexton types to bring out the full flower of our potential...be well always, Gene.

Love,
Sage

Gene, you understand the art of story telling and you do it so very well. I could visualize the wing of the dragon fly as you perched yourself on her lap...

Cheers,
Dan

I waltzed with a rose among the weeds. No small feet, for a frog's ilk. Your creativity searches the fields of unique vantage points. Refreshing to the nascent poets of my ilk. Thanks for making this such a great read. I enjoyed. God bless. JMW

An intriguing poiem that sparked an interest in Anne Sexton, so I did a bit of research. She was bipolar and once said she had a talent for prostitution. I see shades of who she was in your poem. Did you know her? I like the frog/prince metaphor. It ties into Sexton's bipolar disorder with an interesting twist. I haven't read any of Sexton's poetry. If you were to recommend one of her poems, which one would it be?

Gene,

Anne Sexton is one of my favorites - many of hers were personal. As this is - you take us into her world and make us care - she is missed - well done. Keeper (as are you).

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

She did die in 1974 so if you met her recently, either you died too, or she was a spirit...or there is insanity running through you...;) Ed & Rufuz
