Cabin Fever

snowbound
the chill of moonlight
on the window pane

night air crisp and biting,
the pines bending
under a two-day accumulation of snow;
inside the cabin, logs pop and spit
as two old friends swap drinks and tales:

one, sipping gin, plans to write a play
about two aging writers who
challenge their years and friendship
in loving the same woman;

the other pours his scotch,
reads from a poem he is writing
about the songs we sing,
the games we play,
the lies we tell.

night defined
in the whistle of wind
a dog’s cry

play it again, gene.
the shushing epic quality of your words is so beautifully rendered each time....i want to curl up by a fire and listen to you read your own voice.....
pass the wine, pls?
good Lord, this was a film noir nearly. . ..
and the little innuendos...little li.n.es we tell. .. .
foreshadowing. ..
more pls.

A snowbound winter is great when you're insulated and warm inside, everything fresh and a tingle in the air... 'logs that pop and spit'
that's exactly what they do.

One of the friends looks like he's got the script for the next Grumpy Old Men movie.

And the other with his songs of Experience I can relate to very well as I drink my scotch and wry.

Good winter mustings here for you. May we all survive winter cause it has been so frigid a winter so far with more snows than last year and seems so long, but I suppose spring is just around the corner too.I left that old blowing pine tree, that was leaning over so much, at the trailer where I moved from. I don't miss it at all though cause Tom died under it. So sad, but there is a pine tree tall and straight outside the front door of this apartment house as a reminder always too.

So vivid, I'm sitting there. I feel the cold. I hear the wind-even the plaintive dog's cry. I taste the gin and scotch. My hands are cold. I'm going to turn up the heat. That log fire would be nice right now.

Marvelous. Listening in on conversation and drinking is always interesting, and in these lines new discoveries of how two plot to undo the other. Let me know when the play opens and the drinks are ready. - Bill

this is a great saga in poetic form Gene -- how creative of you -- your rendering is one terrific canvas -- I was there with a glass of wine watching the fireplace and our woman -- the latter, very carefully -- take the high road and live in peace and great joy my friend -- JMW

this is such a little glimpse of two stories that it could go many ways...but with the intro “night air crisp and biting, the pines bending under a two-day accumulation of snow; inside the cabin, logs pop and spit” I lean towards stress building, especially with the conversation drawing the lines of deceit...but then again I could be completely out to lunch...Regardless entertaining read Gene.

Bittersweet. The line that caught my eye was where you tell of both loving the same woman. That is a hard road to travle. Stay warm. ~ Sara

Snowbound with cabin fever wouldn't be so bad with good books, & more room than does my camper have to move around in...I liked this one, Gene, as I have never experienced something like it & kinda would like too...Ed & Rufuz
