outdoor concert
the sweet sweet scent
of grass

african freedom rally
shaking hands
with martin luther god

november chill
lunch interrupted
by news from dallas

another hope dies
with an awful bang
and another

the peace parade
candlelight
and night sticks

where
have all the flowers
gone?

1963, the whole crux of this poem, the JFK assassination in Dallas. Flowers for Algernon and If You're going to San Francisco Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair. Flower power and the ecology sign, Volkswagon busses, sweet grass floating in the air...thanks for the memories, Gene...

Love,
Sage

... long time passing and yet it seems like yesterday, Gene... oops, just scrolled down and seen J'nia's comment I'm repeating! Still, it goes well that we are all a chorus here, and ah, yes, we remember it well. Thank you for putting it into deft words and love "martin luther god". A kingly summation of more than a generation... a prophetic legacy whose flowers will never fade even though the mud continues to slide... xx

You bring me back to that young girl that wore a leather floppy hat, sat in her 1965 Chevelle singing that song blasting on my radio...Where have all the flowers gone...You bring me some bittersweet memories, especially the one that I have of Woodstock concert...My Italian parents forbid me to go..but of course I was a rebel back then..lol and I tried to go, but the highways were so backed up I think I got about 30 miles out of Berlin, CT and had to turn back..I will never forget how sad I was as I drove back home with a carload of my friends singing those songs...Santana, Jimi, Janice...omg, what a time in history that we lived!!!!!

Love you for this,
Amber

...long time passing...like they were yesterday...and all the Monday's, can't trust that day. Oh how the echos of the sixties fill our days even today. Very well done Gene. I love it. Hugs, J'nia

The flowers grew up and became Republicans. Who would have thought, huh? Excellent poetry.

I hear the wooden caisson wheels on D.C.'s streets. I see the riderless stallion. The air is steeped with symbolism and weeping eyes. Gene, Your recollections are keen my friend. Errant minds altered history. The flowers we know have to the graveyards gone, everyone. Across the valley that divides man's dreams from the titan of fate. No bridge spans the river of unanswered questions. Your poem lays bare and masterfully that premise my dear friend. I pronounce by the power vested in me that you are fully and completely returned to the house where poets dwell in eminence. May,joy love and peace guide your hand in all matters. Jon Michael

...they are blooming beautifully in your mind, Gene, and always will. Tight, evocative, gentle three-liners running seamlessly into the next and ending on that very famous and never-ending question.
I love this.

I love this poem, Gene - the shape and structure of it, the bittersweet nostalgia of your recollection, and the mere fact that it's yours. My heart is in the scent of that sweet, sweet grass while the sound of Buffalo Springfield's "Kind Woman" rides the breeze. The flowers are still blooming.

and kisses blow'n shot guns peace & serenity
