The Note

We trail a gull’s tracks to the surf,
spot a small green bottle; she
removes the cork, pulls out a note
written in an alien hand.
Unable to read the note she starts
to throw it away. A voice says Stop.

I turn to face a bearded seaman,
an Asian mariner. He asks to see the note,
says it was written by Li Yin, a Chinese poet
in Singapore: Her lover was swept to sea
in a monsoon many years past.
In practiced Mandarin she summons the sea
to deliver the note to her lover,
prays he will return to her.

I reach for the note.
The old man folds it, slips
it into his hat band and walks into the sea.

Wait, I call.
I have a friend in Singapore.
The seaman disappears inside an incoming surge.

I study the green bottle and ask a hovering gull,
Think I should try a better brand of scotch?
The gull flies away with the bottle.

Months later I am skimming a shell out to sea.
The gull returns riding on a squawk,
drops the bottle at my feet.

Wrapped around the bottle a note from the
old mariner says, Honorable friend Flanagan
hopes you enjoy your Singapore Sling.

Scotch or Scootch??? Another Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road to"-write... with Dorothy L'Amour in the middle of mayhem, pouting and puckering nicely!:))... Sling us another one, Flan....!! I do so love your "Around The World in 80 Days" offerings... half the speed of Noah! He might have had his raven and his dove, but did he have his trusty gull? Noooooooooo...... I always imagine him in a cruise-liner captain's cap for some reason... What did you say was in that drink?? :)) xx

Hi Gene,
I always wondered whether there was a Shaggy Bottle story to be told (or in this case, a Bearded one). Your clever tale answered my query. I almost didn't hear the answer through the laughter that engulfed me. Your sense of humor is full, intact and functioning. I'll bet John got his laughs, too!
All the best,
Charlie

now you know I was so engrossed in this love note concept Gene!
A tried & true romantic tale with your modern spin...
I was then wowified by the change of thought to drinking Scotch
who hasn't had a little different perception when drinking? ;)
and low and behold you make us all smile at John's message

Gene, I LOVE this! You have an incredible imagination and a gift for telling a story in poetic verse. And I was hoping that friend in Singapore would turn out to be our own Mr. Flanagan!

Gene, remarkable! Since I am aware that you do not imbibe, you were sober when you penned this gem!? Bottles that bob and weave in the Jersey surf are not to be trusted as certified carriers of truth. Was the seaman, "Captain Morgan" of spiced rum fame? I know the gull that stole your bottle and then unceremoniously dropped it at your feet a month later. Heathcliff Gullible is his name! I think we should sample copious amounts of Singapore Slings and discuss the matter at length. We can invite the gentleman Flanagan to ensure anything with Singapore appearing in its name is legitimate. That's my interpretation and my invitation. And as they say," I'm stickin to it". This is a finely crafted hoot my dear friend. Send us another as soon as you can. Love and peace to you. Jon Michael

The gull took lessons from the old-day homing pigeons and Flanagan is a gentleman who doesn't take to smart-cracking like others for the sheer nonsense of the spotlight...Williamson, you've chosen well for yourself...be well.

Sage

What can I say, Gene? Peter's right, I've taken a hearty Singapore shine to this and will many times again...of course I'm saving it, have to, not because it mentions me but because it's so bloody good, in fact it's brilliant.
Thank You.

John

You can go online and order this stuff now Gene. I mean, this is quaint and romantic and all; but there are easier ways to obtain spirits. On a serious note, no pun intended, I love this!!! Dynamite creativity and sheer brilliance. I'm sure John will take a hearty, Singapore shine to this as well. Land of Raffles and equatorial heat.
