~  Broken Promises  ~

A New love ignited, sweet joys of the heart
Defined by the promises made.
Youth has its season, too quick with the tongue,
Unaware of the honor betrayed.

A promise of confidence, a friend of the heart,
Trusted shoulders to share secret woes,
And carry the burden a real promise bears,
Deceived, when this chapter is closed.

A young child waits, for the promises made,
By two parents who can’t find their way.
Good intentions are lost, when they drink up the cost,
Of the promise, made day after day.

The promise we make to ourselves, lays in wait,
Resolutions made, hiding in shame.
Taken lightly because, the unspoken clause,
Leaves only ourselves to be blamed.

Matter not we betray, the oaths to ourselves
Justifying self-degradation,
Opening closed doors, going through to explore,
Broken promises, of your own creation.

A promise made is a debt unpaid. Just a line from Robert Service, but I think we all do well in our lives to remember that line, especially before we make promises.

Bonnie what beautiful verse you have used to describe something so sad and ugly to the heart, soul and mind.

Bonnie, excellent write. We have all lived a broken promise at one time or other.
