A grey beard, but a lusty heart—
Five sons I have and none of them
Likes school, putting me in mind
Of my own old man.
The elder scapegrace is sixteen
And as lazy as lazy can be.
The next is fifteen and no taste
For reading he ever has.
Thirteen are twins named Dick and Jack
Or Jack and Dick, and yet
They cannot tell seven from eight,
Real young rogues. The youngest Harry
Wants only chestnuts and pears—
He will be. . . eleven, in two years, I guess.
Then, come! Let me empty this jug
Of a beautiful wine, if such be
The will of Heaven—I can’t wait to oblige!

Some very successful people are unschooled; and yet, not everyone who goes to school are guaranteed to become a scholar and be successful.
