Many Happy Returns

God in His wisdom
Gave us this most precious gift,
To discover that we together
Are something more than we could ever believe.
But what happened?
Human frailty, shock, distance,
A haunting silence,
Numb.
Time passes.
We can’t be apart,
We can’t.
We look back at what we had,
And that is what we have to have.
Nothing else is life.
So you speak to me,
I speak to you,
Who we are together once again
Comes into being…
Now with this lesson:
We thought it couldn’t happen to us.
We thought we controlled this kind of love.
But it is always in the hands of God.
We started to think it was just the way we were,
But it was always His grace.
May we never forget again?
No day, no moment, not even for us,
Can anything be certain but His grace.
Back on our knees we thank Him
For this gift of us,
Knowing it is for Him to sustain
All that we are, all that we can be.
It is in His name that I pledge
My love to you,
And by His help
That I will be yours forever.
