An Angel Listens
By John Herlihy

The angel listens,
But does not speak.
The angel waits
From week to week.
He is my true guardian;
My shining star.
His silence is meaningful,
Speaking volumes from afar.
His presence is always there;
His whisper wards off despair.
The weight on my shoulder,
Nothing more than a feather.
Steady and full of surprise,
As unpredictable as the weather.

Don’t tell me he doesn’t exist;
Tell me that I can persist,
With the impulse to recall,
When I am adrift at sea,
He is ever faithful, my landfall.
When I lay down to sleep,
He is by my side.
When I awake to the world,
His presence I abide.
When I lay down to die,
He will be there by my side.
Not dead. Not now.
To live on somehow.
My guardian will take my soul by the hand,
To another dimension in another land,
When he will take leave and disappear,
Another soul on earth to protect and rear.

our angels is a category of sublime beings which is between us and the gods and spirits; their task is to be a cushion between our material existence and spiritual, helping us not to be shocked too much at meeting with the unknown; therefore, we can rely on them. Yes, partly, they are the product of our brains, but who said that our mind is not the most mysterious thing on earth?. . I like the metre of this piece, despite your insight, it makes you sound younger ;)) Cheers, alex

I will take your point to heart, Ron. I listen but I do not speak. I wait for guidance, but will not follow the wrong road. John

I'm with Michael. If we hear voices or see things when no one else is around, it is a normal function of the brain and its constant need to shuffle memories and place some in long-term memory from short-term. If we hear too many voices and they start to control our behavior, it can be considered a mental illness.

In the meantime, go ahead and listen to your angel. But make sure you know it when your angel steers you down the wrong path.

Wonderfully written, but there's nothing more man made than angels.

Oh! Definitely we have some kind of angel with us at all times. When that angel flies away it takes our soul and refurbishes it!! Truly, I love this poem so much!!

Love ya!

I believe that instead of all these angels whispering in our ears, that it is merely common sense which we have learned through our years of living which causes us to hesitate and do what it dictates. No, I will not tell you "he doesn’t exist," but rather giving you my take on all the angels we hear about.

I think of our guardian angels as those of our loved ones who've departed and watch over us, whisper advice, and keep us safe.
