-- The Burden of Death -- by John Herlihy The heavy burden of death we carry best we can Over shoulders, under eyelids, women and men Some come to death’s door cryin’ and screamin’ Others die with nary a peep, their eyes beaming We do see this world in anticipation of the next Say it in all seriousness without any sense of jest Say this world, knowing in future comes another One life can never be enough, sister and brother To lie in green pastures, by still waters to reside I shall not want when by your sacred will I abide On the path of righteousness to restore my soul Fulfill one’s true identity to be made again whole This the truth that in our lives we will surrender This the purpose that our hearts will remember - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Sunday 11 August 2024

I AM DELIGHTED THAT 'THE BURDEN OF DEATH'...IS NOT OURS. I MEAN...REALLY, JUST AS WE HAD NO SAY-SO IN OUR FIRST BREATH...WE WILL HAVE NO SAY-SO IN OUR LAST. IT IS KNOWN BY... Very uniquely abstract beginning, John, especially the second line. Great choice of block form, with lines of equal length. One of my favorite subjects, �continuing�, you have treated well. You are writing a great deal about this subject lately. Are you foretelling something that we should know?

I hope to die peacefully in my sleep. My sleep these days consists of dreams. Some of them could be easily turned into short stories, largely of success and some of unabashed carnal pleasure. I have long prepared for the event, so when it comes I will have no regret.

Whether one's belief relies on the supernatural or science, the common denominator is Existence, a form that is destined to change but not to disappear. As you say, some of us will die with "nary a peep." What's next? Exciting for some, fearful for perhaps many.
