 Who

by John Herlihy

An owl in a distant pine asked
Who
A voice in my mind answered
You
A loon across the pond asked
Why
A voice in my mind answered with
a sigh
A clock in the parlor asked
When
A moment in my mind answered
Then
A shadow on the wall asked
Where
A light in my mind answered
There
A judge in my mind asked
What
A voice in my mind answered
Not
A question in my mind asked
If
A devil in my mind answered
Never
A sage in my mind asked
How long
A spirit in my mind answered
Forever.

 Reviews of "Who"
Reviewed by Ronald Hull
Reviewed on September 15, 2026
A very creative and interesting poem, thoroughly enjoyed. What we see, hear, smell or otherwise receive by our senses, night or day, is processed through our brain before we conclude what is going on. Your short responses to stimuli, the split-second reaction of the brain interpreting what is coming in.

That said, I'd love to hear the call of the owl again. Probably one of the most recognizable of night sounds other than the wolf and the cicada.
