When I will become a cheetah,
Little One,
then I shall graze no more.
No more shall the birds come
who pick itches from my ears.
No more shall I stand by you when we drink from the water,
and the hippos and the zebras
shall no longer grant me space.
When I will become a cheetah,
Little One,
I shall blend in with the tall grass,
I shall run as I have never run--
fast and close to the ground
instead of bounding over it.
When I will become a cheetah
I will fear the time at first,
and then I shall know which one
I shall be...
and I may look to thee
and call for thee,
but you must not come near
for your time with the herd
is not yet over...
and I may try and bring you early,
and we cannot both be one.
When I will become a cheetah
I shall remember you,
and I will look forward to the time when you can become a cheetah, too.
Little One, run fast, leap free,
be with the herd and learn--
learn all you can.
Never stray far from water,
and beware always of man.
