A Metaphor

Poem Artwork

Where once I was strong in both web and in weft

Enduring things that saw others bereft

A selvedge to field all that life‘s muse could throw

My purpose evolved, I was ready to sew

Made up then, was I, into various things

With exploits that taught me what fortitude brings

Stretched to the limits and pulled into line

Casually thrown into shapes that were mine

Bought and then fraught by a starry-eyed punk

Torn and forlorn and discarded as junk

My once pristine knap became coarser with use

My character grew as my weave became loose

Until these days I’m faded, my purity past

Experience shows me that youth cannot last

My fibres are softer, my years are portrayed

My thread’s prone to damage, more easily frayed

I’m fragile and jaded, I’m shabby and chic

Perhaps I’ll emerge as a priceless antique.

Pulled right to the whimsical ending. Didn't see that one coming. A farcically woven tale! Priceless, indeed! M.True

Ruan, Love the metaphor and how you added the fiber being your life

What a life you weave! I am drawn into the fabric of it like a stitch pulled tightly into place. So it all boiled down to a starry eyed punk? At least you haven't come out frayed.

From the looms of Ruan: A priceless tapestry of words, wit, and wonderment. Masterfully woven.

Wonderful flow and poignancy woven into this metaphoric dazzler. Well done. BTW, there is a retrospect of Ghanaian artist, El Anatsui, featured in this Sunday's NYT. http://www.nytimes.com/pages/arts/index.html I think you'll find this array of tapestry-like works as fascinating as I did.

Oh, I think you have already emerged as priceless, but I think antique you are not. I liked this poem very much even if I did have to look up selvedge and weft. To describe your life and yourself as a beautiful, hand-sewn rug is masterful and absolutely charming. Stand. Take a bow.
